Cataract surgery is best known for correcting cloudy vision brought on by cataracts. However, is it possible for this same procedure to fix other underlying vision issues to truly give you a crystal-clear experience?
In addition to removing cataracts from your eyes, your physician will give you multiple intraocular lens (IOL) options to choose from to replace your affected one. Your new lens also has the benefit of improving your vision if you have myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness).
A monofocal lens can improve either myopia or hyperopia, and your physician can guide you on which vision correction is more pressing to correct for your daily routine. Those wishing to have both vision issues corrected can choose a multi-focal lens, letting you seeing clearly without the need for glasses.
Astigmatism is a very specific type of blurry vision due to a curvature of the cornea. This can lead to distorted or wavy images and consistent eyestrain. This can also be corrected with a particular IOL called a toric lens.
Unlike the monofocal lens, the toric lens addresses the curvature issues stemming from your eye and can be modified to fix astigmatism along with either nearsightedness or farsightedness.
Many patients struggle to see at night, and cataracts, nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can make that task even more difficult. Beyond fixing light sensitivity and glares from the cataract itself, your surgery can also improve your vision with any of the previously mentioned lens options and give you better visual comfort on the road.
Dr. Payal Patel, a CEENTA cataract surgeon at our Matthews and Monroe offices, describes the success patients have with renewed eyesight following surgery. “We have so many options now to tailor cataract surgery to meet your needs. With different lens implant options and laser assistance, we can reduce your need for glasses and improve the overall quality of your vision. I love hearing how happy and surprised patients are by how much better their vision is after surgery. It’s an exciting time to have surgery.”
