Woman receiving a rhinoplasty nose procedure

Your nose can define your face. From the length of the bridge to the size of the nostrils, your nose is a part of your identity. While some are happy with the shape of their nose, others may be looking for a way to achieve better facial symmetry or to look and breathe better. If you fall under the latter category, there’s one procedure to consider: rhinoplasty.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure to modify and adjust the nose. Although there are multiple variations of rhinoplasty, they fall under two broad categories:

Functional rhinoplasty

If your breathing is hampered by your nose, your physician may recommend a functional rhinoplasty. This treatment involves adjusting narrow nasal passages or a misaligned septum in order to give the nose better functionality for smelling and breathing.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty

If your nasal concerns are mainly aesthetic, you may receive a cosmetic rhinoplasty. This could include fixing noses that have wide nostrils, pinched tips, or overall misalignment. Many patients may receive a combination of the two categories.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Candidacy for rhinoplasty is mainly determined by health. Dr. Susan Yanik, a CEENTA facial plastic surgeon at our Concord and Huntersville offices, goes into further detail. "Ideal candidates should be at least 16 years old after their nose has stopped growing, in good health, and does not or no longer smokes. Candidates should also have realistic goals in mind for the procedure with reasonable expectations about the outcome."

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

Typically an outpatient procedure, rhinoplasty can take between 1 to 3 hours. You will receive a general or local anesthetic prior to the surgery.

Following the procedure, you will have a multi-phased approach to recovery. Your surgeon will fasten an adhesive splint onto your nose and will instruct you to apply ice to it periodically with head elevation. The majority of the swelling will subside within three weeks, with nasal congestion clearing up within a month.

In addition, your physician may recommend the following post-op recovery tips:

  • Avoid impacts to the face
  • Reduce your sun exposure
  • Be mindful of wearing glasses or sunglasses
  • Do not blow your nose
  • Avoid strenuous activity for a month
