After making the decision to correct your vision, your world opens up to a variety of options that allow you to see more clearly. Two of the most common methods include glasses and contact lenses. Both have prominent benefits to your sight and overall well-being, but which one should you choose?
Determining whether to wear glasses or contacts can be boiled down to the following aspects:
Glasses offer the simplest method of application: simply place them on your head and adjust on the bridge of the nose. Removal is also just as easy. However, some people may find the constant touch against the sides of the head to be too noticeable, and others may find the nose pads to be too uncomfortable if they are not fitted right. If your glasses are bothering you, you can stop by a CEENTA optical shop to have them adjusted.
Conversely, contact lenses have a bit of a learning curve with initial wear. Some patients may prefer not to touch their eyes initially, though many build up comfort over time and can put them in with ease. Patients may also find contacts to be unnoticeable during their daily routine aside from any irritation that comes with an older or torn pair of lenses.
Both glasses and contacts require proper care and attention, especially when it comes to cleaning and storage. Glasses are exposed more to dirt, debris, and the environment, so their storage comes with a hard-shell case along with a scratch-free cloth to clean effectively. Mishandling your glasses could be costly and take time to repair.
For contacts, you’ll be tasked with daily disinfection and storage in a smaller case. This makes it super convenient to carry with you in instances where you need to remove them, but also more likely to be forgotten. On the plus side, ordering monthly or weekly packs of lenses ensures that your replacement is as fast as opening a new pack.
Dr. Megan Miles, a CEENTA optometrist who practices out of our SouthPark office, adds additional clarity regarding contact lens usage. "Daily contact lenses have the easiest management, as you throw them away at the end of the day and get a fresh lens each morning. No lens cleaning is required, just wash your hands."
Ultimately some of the most important factors in your choice are your daily routine and hobbies. Glasses can be removed quickly before bed while contacts require the additional step of sanitation. Casual or serious athletes can enjoy better vision with contacts without the fear of their glasses falling off or being damaged, yet those who enjoy swimming would be better off with a separate pair of prescription goggles. Humid areas or steam from cooking can fog your glasses, while makeup may be applied accidentally to your contacts.
As Dr. Miles puts it, "Whether you choose glasses, contact lenses, or both, CEENTA is here for all of your vision needs." Our eye care professionals can update your prescription to improve your sight and recommend a variety of frames and lenses at our optical shops.
