Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure performed by a professional to reduce dead skin cells from the face. The procedure involves a thin surgical scalpel or an oscillating blade called a dermatome to exfoliate the skin.

There is not an age minimum or limit for dermaplaning and can be useful for patients of all ages and skin complexions. With that said, older patients may heal slower than younger patients, and special consideration is taken for those with vascular lesions, cold sores, or are healing from skin burns.
Prior to the treatment, your esthetician will provide you with a local anesthetic or numbing spray/cream on the target area. Next, they will use the scalpel or the dermatome to gently scrape over your skin at an angle. The procedure itself should last up to 30 minutes and is outpatient.
Patients who receive dermaplaning will have minimal recovery time of approximately three days. Side effects may include redness and mild skin sensitivity. It is also advised to avoid direct sun exposure or to use sunscreen with a high SPF rating to avoid blotchy skin.
Following the treatment and recovery, patients can expect vibrant, smooth skin in the target area with results lasting up to a month.
