  5. What should I do after receiving a cosmetic filler?

What are cosmetic fillers?

Cosmetic fillers (also known as dermal fillers or soft tissue fillers) are injections made into the skin to enhance the appearance of the target area. This procedure can be performed in a multitude of facial areas, including the:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Nasolabial folds (beside the nose)
  • Area under the eyes

What do cosmetic fillers do?

Depending on the target area, fillers can add extra volume or plumpness. For areas such as the cheeks or under the eyes, fillers can remove wrinkles and make the skin appear smoother. Other areas, like the lips, will look fuller and provide additional facial symmetry.

Dr. Susan Yanik, a CEENTA facial plastic specialist who practices out of our Concord and Huntersville offices, goes into further detail about the nature of cosmetic fillers. “Fillers can give back volume lost with aging, and the goal is to appear natural and rejuvenated.”

What ingredients are found in fillers?

Fillers are made with a combination of natural and synthetic active ingredients. These ingredients may vary depending on the specific product, but some of the most common ones are:

  • Hyaluronic acid: a naturally occurring sugar
  • Poly-L—lactic acid: a polyester made from plant starch
  • Calcium hydroxyapatite: a naturally occurring calcium

Who would be a good candidate for cosmetic and cheek fillers?

Good candidates for receiving cosmetic fillers are those who are in good physical health and who do not smoke. In addition, they have reasonable expectations and goals of what they want to accomplish with the treatment with an optimistic outlook.

What should I do after receiving a cosmetic filler?

Following your filler procedure, you may experience swelling, bruises, and tenderness in the injection sites. With your physician’s recommendation, you can apply an ice pack to your face to help mitigate these side effects. If your fillers contain hyaluronic acid, your physician may also recommend that you increase your water intake to stay hydrated.

In terms of what to avoid, you should limit your exposure to UV rays from the sun as well as makeup, strenuous exercise, and pressure on your face.
